UC Riverside & Berkeley Hair Regeneration Study

UC Riverside and UC Berkeley hair regeneration research study.

UC Riverside and UC Berkeley hair researchers recently discovered that the protein TGF-beta manages a dual, opposing role in hair follicles by regulating both the activation of stem cells (promoting growth) and the initiation of cell death (apoptosis). This single signalling molecule acts as a molecular switch, where specific concentrations dictate whether hair grows or the follicle dies, offering potential targets for treating hair loss and improving wound healing.

TGF-beta (Transforming Growth Factor-beta) is a crucial protein regulating the hair follicle cycle, acting as a “double-edged sword” that can either stimulate hair growth or induce follicle regression (apoptosis/cell death). High levels of TGF-$\beta$1 and TGF-$\beta$2 are linked to hair loss and the transition to the resting phase.

    • Growth Activation: In certain quantities, TGF-beta stimulates hair follicle stem cells, helping to initiate the hair growth cycle.

    • Cell Death (Apoptosis): Conversely, when too much TGF-beta is produced, it triggers the apoptosis process, causing hair follicle cells to die.

    • Mechanism: Riverside and Berkeley hair researchers identified this mechanism through clinical studies on how cells communicate to manage the life cycle of the hair follicle, where they published their findings.

The study highlights that TGF-beta is critical to the hair follicle’s cycle, controlling the transition between growth (anagen) and death (catagen) phases.

More research into TGF-beta and hair regeneration is set to take place within the Berkeley hair clinic science ecosystem-where much of the engineering, clinical testing and clinic reviews will take place over the next few years.
